The Programme:

Over three action-packed movie making days, young filmmakers will produce their own unique film production.

Young filmmakers taking part cover lots of fundamental filmmaking skills, including directing skills, camera skills, acting for camera, production design and more.

They’ll work together as a small production crew to make their own movie, inspired by their ideas and stories.

At the end of the workshop, we edit it into a complete production and share with you to watch and enjoy, as well as to keep and add to portfolios.

Creative Learning

The young filmmakers delve into every aspect of the filmmaking process. Through participation, filmmakers develop their imaginations. They learn to express their creativity and their ideas. They also develop their soft skills, including teamwork and communication.

Under guidance from our team of workshop instructors, they explore professional film production techniques, covering pre-production through to post-production. They work towards their own film productions, gradually building up their portfolio of work, as well as their skillset.

Groups & Instruction

Maximum Class Size: 12 filmmakers per studio

Staff Ratio = 1:8 maximum (in practice often 1:6)

We like to get to know every child well and give them plenty of practical opportunity. Class sizes are small to ensure every child has plenty of opportunity to contribute, as well a high level of personalised attention.

Sessions are led by the Sparks team of specialist instructors, who are all DBS-checked. The team is highly trained filmmakers and artist-educators. Our team members are all friendly, passionate about inspiring others and they bring a sense of fun and enjoyment to every workshop session. All our team take part in specialist training and operate under our Safeguarding Policy.

Our staff to student ratios are at least 1 staff member: 8 students (often higher than this is practice). We’re also Ofsted registered and follow strict Safeguarding practices and policies.

Project Based Learning

We use an educational methodology known as ‘Project Based Learning’, which means the young filmmakers learn by doing and taking on responsibilities in real projects.

It’s a programme that we’ve developed over the last 10 years. It empowers the young filmmakers, and accelerates the development of life skills such as teamwork and decision-making. It’s also inclusive for children who learn in different ways and engage with individual interests.

The young filmmakers step into the professional roles you’ll find on a real film set. They become directors, crew, actors, editors, etc.

The crews love taking on all the different creative roles and taking responsibility for their individual and group contributions. They love the sense of ownership, as well as the space to express their ideas and viewpoints. It inspires them to try their best and to continually push their creativity.
